Daniel Pearl Berkshire Scholarship
Pearl Scholarship information available
The North Adams Transcript and
The Berkshire Eagle have announced plans to award the
second annual Daniel Pearl Berkshire Scholarship. The
$1,000 award will be given in memory of Daniel Pearl,
the Wall Street Journal reporter kidnapped and killed
in Pakistan early in 2002. Pearl earlier worked in the
Berkshires at both daily newspapers.
While Pearl's career was in journalism, he was also
a gifted musician, trained as a classical violinist.
He also played guitar and mandolin, and while living
in the Berkshires he performed in a bluegrass band.
For this reason the award will be given to a student
who intends to study and pursue a career in either journalism
or music.
Complete guidelines and application forms have been
distributed to the guidance departments of all area
high schools. Eligibility is limited to residents of
Berkshire County or areas outside the county where home
delivery of either The Eagle or the Transcript is available.
Applicants must plan to enter college in the fall of
2004. Applications must be returned by April 30.
If applications are not available via a student's high
school guidance office they may be obtained by phoning
the Transcript at 663-3741. Applications may also be
found online at http://www.berkshireeagle.com/
or http://www.thetranscript.com/,
and click on "Pearl Scholarship" in the left-hand bar
under "Services." |
